Ryan Reynolds's Trailer Preview For Detective Pikachu

Blake Lively Looks Totally Over It as Ryan Reynolds Goes Full Method For Detective Pikachu

There's a new trailer for Detective Pikachu on the horizon, and to prepare us, Ryan Reynolds is taking us inside his superserious, not at all ridiculous, acting process. On Monday, the actor released a video, "Outside the Actors Studio," where he describes exactly how method he decided to go when he took on the role of Pikachu. Mostly, it just sounds like he's making an excuse for why he forgot to pick up his kids from school.

"You know, I lived it and I breathed it; I became the character," he explains in the video as he cradles a Poké Ball. "I spent the entire year as Detective Pikachu. I read about him. I live at his height. I tried to lose 182 pounds to match his weight until doctors intervened."

Sounds totally healthy! Reynolds goes on to say that playing the mouse Pokémon is a "privilege" that he doesn't take lightly and devoted every second of his energy to "making this character come alive with the same exacting standards that the most discerning fans would come to expect." This led to a particularly interesting event concerning his daughters with wife Blake Lively.

"I was on my way to pick up my daughters from school when I heard that I got the role. I didn't show up at school because Detective Pikachu, he doesn't know who those two little girls are," Reynolds recalled. "Who are they?"

The video cuts to Lively, who is clearly over her husband's shenanigans. "They're our daughters. He just left them."

Lively pops back into the video two more times, including one moment where she says the thing that we're also thinking about Reynolds's Pikachu performance. "I mean, he didn't even change his voice. It just sounds like him!"

Watch Reynold's video above before the new trailer arrives on Tuesday, and get ready to see all his hard work (and possible mild child neglect) come to fruition when Detective Pikachu hits theaters May 10.
