Survivor's Luke Toki Has Shared a Video Thanking Fans Who Donated to the $500k GoFundMe
In one of the most wholesome news stories to come out of Australian TV in quite some time, last week Australian Survivor viewers rallied behind fan favourite Luke Toki to raise a staggering $550,440 on GoFundMe. Hearts broke across the nation when Luke came just shy of winning the title of sole Survivor and the $500k prize that came with it, in part due to his personal circumstances.
Luke and his wife Mary are parents to two sons who are on the autism spectrum, as well as baby Madeline who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis earlier this year.
Touched by the family's story, over 16,000 Aussies donated in droves to what ultimately become the third fastest-growing GoFundMe in Australian history.
Luke made the decision to shut down the GoFundMe once it surpassed its original $500k goal, explaining in an interview with Western Australia's The Sunday Times that he "[didn't] want to take anything more" than what the prize money would have been had he won.
Now, in a touching new video, Luke gathered Mary and little Madeline to express his gratitude for the public's support.
"We are very humbled by the response, I had accepted that I had lost and that was the outcome, to then find out what happened and what has occurred is huge," he said.
He also went on to add that he would be donating the extra $50,440 raised to charity. Although he has yet to determine how many charities or causes he will include, Mary confirmed that a "large amount" of the money will be going to the cystic fibrosis Care Today, Cure Tomorrow project.
